Little puppy Huckleberry sat injured in a shelter for 5 long days, unable to walk. We were able to rescue him on the 6th day and get him to our orthopedic surgeon for evaluation. He will need his left rear leg amputated and his broken right hip stabilized. Huck's pelvis is fractured too. Despite being in pain he interacted with our volunteer by chewing on her hand and wagging his tail. He likes to be held and take a nap in your arms. We can only imagine the beginning of Huckleberry's short life as he came into the shelter with traumatic injuries, and fleas and ticks.
Update Huckleberry had surgery to remove his left rear leg and had FHO surgery on his right hip (removing ball of hip), the day after we were able to rescue him. He is recovering at the orthopedist hospital and will be in the loving home of a fabulous foster in a few days. Please check back for updates as we cheer this little boy on to a new pain free life.
Huckleberry continues to improve with his energy level good and healthy enthusiasm to match. He's a real cutie pie, whose body is growing and becoming stronger everyday.
Honestly, it looks like his front feet and chest have become larger and wider to compensate for the lack of strength in his hips and hind right leg. Even his ears look larger and floppier!
Huckleberry lives with 3 dogs and a cat. He's very good for a puppy, only annoying them minimally. :-)
He's almost house trained with only a few accidents. Remember, he was unable to even walk a few short weeks ago.
Huckleberry's recuperation period will be 12-16 weeks, so stay tuned for more updates and pictures as he heals, learns, and becomes increasingly stronger. Huckleberry's preferred home will be with another friendly dog, that will gently play with him.
